The Deutsches Weininstitut (DWI) is run under a managing director with around forty people working underneath. The main office of the DWI is located in Gutenbergplatz in Mainz. It is an institution which includes a network that works on behalf of the German wine industry and its encompassing interests.

The German Wine Fund was made a legal entity via the federal German wine law of 29 August 1961. It was supported by the domestic wine industry and both the DWI and the German Wine Fund are involved in the generic promotion according to German wine regulations. Most of their research includes the legalities and social impact including; wine and the public, wine in relation to health and wine regarding the quality of life.
