Sophisticated

Definition - What does Sophisticated mean?

Sophisticated is a descriptor used to describe a wine which has obvious complexity in its nose as well as its palate. This is usually not a term used to describe sweet or young wines, but for wines with an essence of terroir, and varying levels in its aroma and bouquet.

WineFrog explains Sophisticated

A wine can gain sophistication from proper aging, or it may be sophisticated in its youth because of its origins, blend, hand-selected fruit and/or how the wine was crafted. It will be noted for its structure, balance in tannin, acidity and fruit from the first sip to its finish.

A sophisticated wine may be a white or red wine and on occasion a rosé wine. These wines are typically collectors' wines and meant for long cellaring and aging.
